Turkmenistan strives for saving Caspian Sea resources during COVID-19

Turkmenistan put forward proposals to save Caspian Sea resources during COVID-19 pandemic,Trend reports with reference to Turkmenistan's State News Agency.

Representatives of Turkmenistan's Caspian Sea Institute offered the proposals during an international conference titled "Blue economy and the COVID-19 pandemic: new challenges, recovery measures and sustainability".

The online conference was organized by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization and the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) in cooperation with International Ocean Institute (IOI).

The conference was organized within the World Ocean Week and on the eve of World Oceans' Day, which is celebrated annually on June 8.

The conference participants noted the relevance of the initiatives of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov aimed at realizing the geopolitical and geo-economic potential of the Caspian region.

The proposals of the president of Turkmenistan can serve as a basis for effective interaction of the five littoral countries of the Caspian Sea with international structures, said the report.

The economic, environmental and social consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic for coastal and island states were discussed during the meeting. The parties also considered measures to restore and develop international trade, maritime transport and logistics, fishing and seafood production, coastal and marine tourism, as well as other areas related to the use of the resources of the seas and oceans in the post-crisis period.
