Work on increasing level of drinking water supply to Uzbek regions continues

Over 1.2 million residents have been provided with drinking water for the first time as a result of the work done in 2020 to increase the level of drinking water supply in the regions of Uzbekistan, the Uzsuvtaminot Joint Stock Company told Trend on Wednesday.

According to the Uzsuvtaminot JSC, the company and the limited liability companies included in its organizational structure have been transferred to a new corporate governance system.

"The corporate governance system did not work properly at these enterprises. The financial and economic activities of enterprises along with performance indicators were not assessed," the Uzsuvtaminot said.

According to the information, to date, changes have been made to the corporate governance system of 17 regional water supply limited liability companies, supervisory boards are being organized locally, and an internal audit service is being introduced.

Uzsuvtaminot reported that over 1.2 million residents were provided with drinking water for the first time as a result of the work done in 2020 to improve the level of drinking water supply in the regions. “Accordingly, the level of provision of centralized drinking water supply for the population of the republic has been brought from 70.8 percent to 73 percent,” the company stressed.

In particular, it is reported that 54.9 percent of the population in the Bukhara region is provided with a centralized drinking water supply, the remaining 45.1 percent is supplied with water delivered by transport.

Also, according to the source, there are five water sources in the Bukhara region - Kuyu-mozor reservoir (320,000 cubic meters per day), Damkhuzha main water supply network (55,000), Dvoinik water structure (50,000), Zarafshon water structure (15,000), and underground sources (14,000)

In addition, a large project is being implemented in the Bukhara region in order to build new sewerage networks and reconstruct existing ones together with the World Bank, according to which in 2021 a sewerage treatment plant with a treatment capacity of 100,000 cubic meters per day will be built, 80.3 kilometers of sewer networks will also be reconstructed.

The company also noted that as a result, the coverage of the sewerage network in the region from the current 61 percent will reach 75 percent.

"At the same time, the sanitary and epidemiological situation will improve, the number of infectious diseases will decrease, the basis for the formation of a healthy gene pool will appear, and the living conditions of the population will improve," Uzsuvtaminot said.

Uzsuvtaminot Joint Stock Company was organized in accordance with the decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan dated November 26, 2019. Its authorized capital was formed by the delivery of state assets and their share in the authorized capital of state unitary enterprises of the Ministry of Housing and Communal Services. These businesses have been reorganized as limited liability companies.
