A number of top Syrian naval commanders along with an Iranian military delegation and Tehran's ambassador to Damascus visited the Iranian warships which have recently passed through the Suez Canal, Tehran Times reported.
Two Iranian warships docked in Syria on Wednesday after passing through the Suez Canal into the Mediterranean Sea.
They are the first Iranian Navy vessels to enter the Mediterranean Sea since the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979.
According to the commander of the Iranian Navy, Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari, the ships are not performing military exercises but are only making a routine and friendly visit.
The Iranian ambassador to Damascus Ahmad Mousavi told visitors that "Iran's message to the regional nations has always been peace and friendship. The presence of the Iranian Navy's warships in the Mediterranean Sea is no threat to any country."
Commenting on the relationship between Iran and Syria, he said the strong and friendly relationship between the two countries has foiled the arrogant powers' plots.
