Iran is ready to export 100 megawatts of electricity to Lebanon through Turkey and Syria, Mehr News Agency quoted the director of Iran's power company as saying.
Electricity exports to Lebanon will begin gradually once talks with Syria and Turkey are finalized and the necessary permits are issued, Homayoun Haeri, managing director for the Iranian power generation transmission and distribution management company (TAVANIR) said.
In the first phase, Iran will send Lebanon 100 megawatts of electricity a day.
So far this year, Iran has exported more electricity to its neighbors in the region than ever before (Iran's solar year ends in March). The 6,700 gigawatt hours of power sold to other countries is 26 percent more than electricity exports for the same period of time last year.
Turkmenistan, Turkey, Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan import electricity from Iran and it is expected that Iran will connect its power grid to the countries on the Persian Gulf's southern border.
The Iranian government pays each citizen $45 a month as compensation for commodities and energy subsidies which were cut when the targeted subsidies program began.
