Imposed sanctions on Iran is illogical - Mehmanparast

Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb. 21 /Trend S.Isayev, T. Jafarov/

The sanctions imposed on Islamic Republic of Iran is an illogical measure, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said at the press briefing in Tehran this morning.

"It seems like because of the pressure from the West and the EU, some European countries have taken this course," spokesman said.

The EU formally imposed an oil embargo on Iran and agreed to a freeze on the assets of the Iranian Central Bank on January 23, but existing contracts will be honored until July 1.

Iran's Foreign Ministry on Feb. 15 summoned the ambassadors of EU countries. The ambassadors of Italy, Spain, France, Greece, Portugal and Netherlands in Tehran were summoned to Iran's Foreign Ministry, in connection with sanctions imposed on the Islamic Republic.

It was later reported that Iran has cut oil supply to France and Netherlands, while issuing an ultimatum to four countries - Italy, Spain, Greece, Portugal - which says that if the long-term agreement is not signed over next two years with Iran, the country will stop oil supplies

The news were refuted lated, as Iran's Oil Ministry denied state media reports on the Islamic state stopping its crude exports to European countries.

Mehmanparast expressed hope that relations between Iran and the EU will normalize.

"We favor the co-operation between Iran and the EU," spokesman said. "We feel committed to providing Europe with our energy, however this can only be possible if we can obtain guarantees for payments".

Mehmanparast continued, by saying that situation is different in every country in Europe, however it is "for them to decide". He underscored that because of this path, European people will feel the pressure.
