Iranian envoy reiterates peaceful nature of nuclear program

A senior Iranian diplomat said that Tehran has continued cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as part of its confidence-building measure which is aimed at displaying the peaceful nature of its nuclear program to the world, Fars News reported.

In an interview with Vienna-based Courier daily, Iran's Ambassador to Austria Ebrahim Sheibani noted that the Iranian officials are trying to show to the world that Iran's nuclear program is not confidential or covert and that Iran is merely pursuing peaceful purposes through confidence building measures.

Iran's nuclear activities are under the IAEA's full supervision, the diplomat added.

However, he said that although hundreds of closed circuit cameras have been installed inside Iranian nuclear facilities, IAEA still wants to inspect military facilities which have nothing to do with Iran's nuclear activities.

Referring to negotiations between Iranian officials and IAEA team, Sheibani responded that cooperation should be based on mutual trust.

On Wednesday, Iran's Representative to the IAEA Ali Asqar Soltaniyeh announced that the Iranian and IAEA experts' recent negotiations have yielded good results, and reiterated the necessity for continued talks between the two sides.

A delegation of the International Atomic Energy Agency headed by IAEA Deputy Director-General Herman Nackaerts visited Iran on Monday.

Washington and its Western allies accuse Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons under the cover of a civilian nuclear program, while they have never presented any corroborative evidence to substantiate their allegations. Iran denies the charges and insists that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.

Tehran stresses that the country has always pursued a civilian path to provide power to the growing number of Iranian population, whose fossil fuel would eventually run dry.

Despite the rules enshrined in the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) entitling every member state, including Iran, to the right of uranium enrichment, Tehran is now under four rounds of UN Security Council sanctions for turning down West's calls to give up its right of uranium enrichment.

Tehran has dismissed West's demands as politically tainted and illogical, stressing that sanctions and pressures merely consolidate Iranians' national resolve to continue the path.
