Iranian president-elect Hassan Rohani said the recent presidential election in Iran was a turning point in the country's history.

Addressing a gathering of officials at the IRIB conference hall in Tehran, Rohani appreciated all strata of the society for materializing a political epic, adding that their massive turnout materialized the Islamic system's legal bases among peoples.

He went on to say that the national economy should be run by people and the government should supervise. The same should happen in cultural affairs, he noted.

He added that the Iranian nation has always been in favor of moderation and avoided extremism. "During the presidential election, people proved that they seek justice, ethics, moderation, and law in the society", Rohani said.

The next administration will act based on law and no one will be above the law, he stressed.

Rohani won 50.7 percent of the vote to secure an outright victory. In the Iranian system, if no presidential candidate receives 50 percent of the vote, the two top candidates must face off in a run-off election.

Nearly 50.5 million Iranians, including more than 1.6 million first-time voters, were eligible to participate in the presidential election. The Interior Ministry put the voter turnout at 72.7 percent.

Rohani currently represents Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei in the Supreme National Security Council and is also a member of the Expediency Council and the Assembly of Experts. He is also the director of the Expediency Council's Center for Strategic Research.
