Iran has boosted the development of offshore fishing to ensure food security in the country, said the head of Iranian Fisheries Organization Nabiullah Khun Mirzaiee, Trend reports citing IRNA.
“The total fishing volume in the country increased significantly, which is mostly from the Indian Ocean,” he said.
Mirzaiee went on to say that in recent years, unprecedented measures have been taken in the fishery sector.
“The average investment in the country's fisheries sector has doubled,” he said, adding that currently there are more than 140,000 people working in fishing sector with more than 11,000 fishing vessels.”
Referring to the increase in per capita consumption of aquatic animals to 13.5 kg in 2020, the head of the Fisheries Organization of Iran said the most important pillar of increasing the consumption of aquatic animals in the country is primarily the increased production.
According to IRNA, the country's total fishery production has increased from 885,000 tons in 2013 to more than 1.2 million tons in 2020, so that the country's shrimp production has quadrupled, and sturgeon production has increased 12 times.
