Iran's top official says internet should not be restricted

TEHRAN, Iran, Aug. 2

Trend:

Head of Iran's presidential office Mahmoud Vaezi said that since the cyberspace is used by many services and businesses, so internet shouldn't be restricted or blocked, Trend reports citing IRNA.

Referring to the government`s performance in science and technology sector in the last 8 years, Vaezi said that in 2013, the country had about 52 knowledge-based companies, which has now grown by 120 times to 6,000 companies.

Criticizing the inappropriate view of the internet, he said that in his opinion, there was a lot of inappropriate content on social media, but it is just a small part of cyber space.

"The cyberspace solved the people's problems during the COVID-19 era," he said.

Referring to the Iranian parliament's plan to limit the internet, he said the people have the right to use it.

"The parliament wasn't formed to limit the people," Vaezi said.

"I have always been opposed to inappropriate content in cyberspace, and measures must be taken in relation to monitor inappropriate content, but under this pretext, the entire cyberspace should not be filtered or blocked," he said.
