(Hurriyet) - The Turkish Red Crescent has announced that it will be presenting both President Ahmet Necdet Sezer and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan with medals in honor of their service in past years. Erdogan's medal will be presented to him on November 1, which is also "Red Crescent Day," and will be in recognition of his work following the deadly Asian tsunami, as well as in support of channeling public funding towards the Red Crescent in general, reports Trend.
The medals in honor of service are to be a new annual tradition for the Turkish Red Crescent, and will be presented from now on once a year to people who are perceived as worthy of the recognition.
Reports have noted that the Red Crescent has spent a "fortune" on the medals, with the two alone for Erdogan and Sezer reportedly costing the organization
21 thousand YTL, or around $15,000.
