Experts: West unlikely to support billionaire Ivanishvili in struggle for power in Georgia

Georgia, Tbilisi, Oct. 18 / Trend N. Kirtskhalia /

The West is unlikely to support billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili in his struggle for power in Georgia, as he will fail to stimulate the West's interest with his funds alone, Georgian expert Tornike Sharashenidze told Trend on Tuesday.

"Nobody knows Ivanishvili as a politician," he said. "But everything cannot be bought for money. The West will support the choice of the Georgian people. But people are unlikely to see Ivanishvili as the president."

The expert stressed that Ivanishvili is likely to hope that the majority of the Georgian population wants good ties with Russia.

"Ivanishvili hopes that he will win the voters' confidence with his statement about improving relations with Moscow," he said. "As he welcomes Putin's presidency, as an inevitability, he is going to establish good relations with Russia."

Expert Zurab Anjaparidze thinks that the most important parts of Ivanishvili's statements coincide with Burjanadze's and Noghaideli's.

"Ivanishvili said he will be able to normalize relations with Russia," he told Trend. "We have already heard this rhetoric from politicians associated with the Kremlin."
