Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas met with Egypt's military rulers on Thursday in his first visit to the country since former Egyptian president Hosny Mubarak stepped down, state media reported, DPA reported

Abbas met with Egyptian Defence Minister Hussein Tantawi, now in charge of the country, for talks on reconciliation between Palestinian groups and efforts to revive the Palestinian-Israeli peace process.

Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat said Abbas was willing to travel to the Gaza Strip to work towards reconciliation between his Fatah movement and the rival Hamas, which took control of the salient seven years ago.

The statement came after Erakat and Abbas held talks with Secretary-General of the Arab League Amr Moussa in Cairo late Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Egypt affirmed its continued support for the Palestinian cause, Foreign Minister Nabil el-Arabi said after holding talks with Abbas Thursday.

Egypt has frequently mediated reconciliation talks between Hamas and Fatah in the past.

Abbas, who arrived in Cairo on Wednesday for a four-day visit, also met with Egyptian Prime Minister Essam Sharaf.
