Israeli Defence Minister: Talks with Iran should not waste time

Talks between Iran and the six powers over Tehran's nuclear programme should lead to a definite result and should not waste time, Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak told radio stations Tuesday dpa reported

He told Israel Radio that the discussions between Iran and Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States "should show whether Iran is prepared to end its nuclear programme or not."

This did not require "months," and "time-outs do not serve this purpose," he added.

"You need several direct meetings where these demands are raised and you see if the other side is playing for time, or is looking for a solution," he said.

In a separate interview, Barak told Israel Army Radio that the chances the talks would lead Iran to halt its nuclear programme were "not high."

On Saturday, Iran relaunched nuclear talks in Istanbul with the six powers to address concerns over its disputed nuclear programme.

The discussions are set to continue in Baghdad on May 23.

Barak told Israel Army Radio that Israel had not given a guarantee that it would refrain from attacking Iran as long as the talks continued.

"There is no Israeli promise," he said.

The talks between the six powers and Iran come amid growing speculation that Israel - which sees Iran as an existential threat due to its leaders' comments that the Jewish state should be wiped off the map - is planning a military strike to retard the development of Iran's nuclear weapons programme.
