Chinese military fighter-bomber crashes

Chinese military aircraft rehearsing for joint anti-terror exercises with Russian forces has crashed in northeast China, Press TV reported.

The fighter-bomber, with two people on board, went down at the Taonan tactical training base in China's northeastern Jilin province on Sunday, the official Xinhua news agency said.

The fate of the crew is still unclear and military officials have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.

Over 1,500 troops from China and Russia plan to take part in the five-day military drill code named "Peace Mission 2009", which is set to start on July 22.

Both countries say they have recently faced a surge in terrorism threats along their central Asian borders.

Analysts believe that the joint exercise is the latest sign of warming ties between former Cold War rivals who once clashed for supremacy in the Communist world.
