India to send special envoy to Sri Lanka to take up Tamil minority issue

Indian Home Minister P. Chidambaram said on Sunday that India would send its special envoy to Sri Lanka in a couple of days to take up with Colombo the issue of resettlement of the internally displaced Tamils in the island nation, Xinhua reported.

Chidambaram said in the southern city of Chennai that New Delhi was in talks with Colombo about the recent attacks on Tamil Nadu's fishermen allegedly by the Sri Lankan Navy and the alleged sufferings of the Sri Lankan Tamils, particularly after the end of the decades-long civil war between Colombo and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels.

The minister was in Chennai to meet Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and apprise him of the central government's decision to resolve the ethnic issue.

There is a large Tamil population in Tamil Nadu and many of them are sympathetic with the LTTE.
