An Australian motorist crossed to the wrong side of the street to run down and kill his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend, a court in Melbourne was told Wednesday.
"Despite the screamed protests of your passengers, you took no evasive action before tragically taking a young man's life," the presiding judge told 20-year-old Leon Borthwick when sentencing him to a minimum five years in prison on a manslaughter charge, dpa reported.
Kornelia Zimmer, the sister of the deceased 19-year-old, said the sentence was inadequate, considering Borthwick had openly spoken of his intention to kill her brother.
"The courts today felt that my brother's life was only worth 25 per cent of the overall sentence he could have had," she said.
Borthwick will be eligible for parole in three years.
