Kate Middleton paid tribute to the late fashion designer Alexander McQueen by choosing a dress by the new creative director of his label, Sarah Burton, in which to wed Britain's Prince William, it announced on Friday by St James' Palace, dpa reported.
The dress, made of ivory and white satin, had long sleeves and shoulders made of French Chantilly lace and a train 2.7 metres long. The full skirt was said to resemble an "opening flower," while the train and bodice were decorated with delicate lace applique flowers.
One of Britain's best known fashion designers, McQueen committed suicide in February 2010.
Burton grew up in the northern city of Manchester and did an internship at McQueen's label in 1996. She became head of women's wear at the firm in 2000 and was appointed creative director after McQueen's death.
A canopy had been put up over the entrance to the Goring Hotel, where Middleton spent her last night as a single woman, in order to conceal the dress until she emerged from the wedding car at Westminster Abbey.
