President Dmitry Medvedev on Thursday reiterated Russia's opposition to NATO's military intervention in Libya, during talks with Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, dpa reported.

"We favour a path on which the problems (in Libya) are resolved not through military action, but through negotiations," Medvedev said at a joint news conference.

"We realize that the road is difficult and the indications we are receiving confirm this ... the fate of the Libyan state must be decided by the Libyan people," Medvedev added.

The meeting took place in Rome where Medvedev, together with US Vice President Joe Biden and dozens of world leaders, attended celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of Italy's unification.

Berlusconi later held a separate meeting with Biden, before hosting a three-way luncheon with the Russian president and the US vice president.
