Romanian PM decides to resign

Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc on Monday announced his decision to tender the resignation of his Cabinet, Xinhua reported.

The prime minister said that he made the move because he "is not clinging to power."

Boc thanked the incumbent ministers and those who were reshuffled under his term in office.

He urged the political class to quickly pass through Parliament a new Cabinet.

"It is extremely important to the country that there is economic stability," Boc stressed, adding that the government has taken very tough decisions in order to overcome the economic crisis.

"There have been convulsions, but the fruit has started to emerge. The economic stability of the country is the most important thing now," he said, adding that "in times of crisis the government is in no popularity contest."

With local elections expected in June and general elections at the end of the year, Romania has recently seen anti-government protests in Bucharest and other major cities.

The protests, the most serious since President Traian Basescu came to power in 2004, were sparked by the resignation of prestigious public health official Raed Arafat earlier this month in protest against a new healthcare bill.

Eventually, the protests turned against the government's austerity measures and unpopular policies, demanding the government and the president to step down.
