The UN Security Council unanimously approved new sanctions against North Korea Thursday in response to the nuclear test it conducted in February, dpa reported.

US Ambassador Susan Rice told reporters at the UN that the resolution approved by the council imposes "significant new sanctions," including tough financial and trade restrictions along with travel bans.

"Taken together, these sanctions will bite, and bite hard," Rice said. "The entire world stands united in our commitment to the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula."
