It is necessary to amend the Azerbaijani legislation to control the import of genetically modified organisms and products.
This was stated at a scientific symposium on "Implementation of UNESCO program on Bioethics in Azerbaijan" held today by the Institute for Human Rights of the Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences together with the Azerbaijani National Commission for UNESCO and the General Office of the International Network of the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics.
The legislation on the import of genetically modified organisms and products was re-designed in some former Soviet republics, the head of the Azerbaijani Bureau of the International Network of the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics, Vugar Mammadov, said. No changes were made in this legislation in Azerbaijan.
The dynamic development of new technologies and new research directions set new ethical and legal requirements to the scientific world and mankind, Mahmud Karimov, the president of the academy, said.
In his speech, the head of the General Office of the International Network of the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics, Amnon Carmi, noted the importance of teaching and developing scientific directions for developing democratic principles aimed at ensuring the legal and ethical standards in the society in Azerbaijan.
Ayten Mustafayeva, Director of the Human Rights Institute under the Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences noted the importance of developing bioethics and health law in Azerbaijan.
Mustafayeva said that the departments on bioethics and health law operate in the Human Rights Institute. She noted that the Azerbaijani office of the International Network of the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics was registered in the institute.
Today, the Human Rights Institute and the organization signed the agreement.
