Azerbaijan and European Union to Hold Discussions

Azerbaijan, Baku, 17 June / corr. Trend M. Aliyev/ Azerbaijan and European Union (EU) will hold next discussions within the new neighborhood policy of the European Union, the representation of the European Commission in Azerbaijan said to Trend on 17 June.

The meeting will be held on 20 June in Brussels. The upcoming presidential elections, situation in media and commitments of Azerbaijan before the European community will be discussed during the meeting.

Mahmud Mammadguluyev, Deputy Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan, will take part in the discussions representing Azerbaijan. 

At the late 2006, Azerbaijan and EU signed an action plan within the European Neighborhood Policy. The parties also signed a memorandum on Cooperation in energy sphere. 

The European Neighborhood Policy (ENP) represents new approach of the European Union to the neighboring countries, aiming to strengthen relations between EU and it neighboring countries and cooperating to create security and welfare zone and a "ring of friendly countries" on the EU borders. ENP also aims to provide opportunities to EU member states to cooperate more closely in politics, security, economy and culture.
