The talks on the transfer of Guantánamo detainees to Georgia today is not considered, Georgian First Deputy Foreign Minister, Giga Bokeria said at a joint briefing with the U.S. Deputy Minister.

He nevertheless expressed willingness to consider this issue, if necessary. "We are ready to assist the United States In all issues, including in this," said Bokeria.

In turn, Vershbow reiterated that it is not necessary to discuss this issue at the moment. "We consider this issue with several countries to fulfill President Obama's promise to close the prison at Guantanamo by late 2009," he said.

Answering journalists, he stressed that the hypothetical possibility of transferring Guantánamo detainees to Georgia is nothing to do with the possible of construction of the U.S. military base in Georgia. "In this regard, we do not examine this issue and do not intend to build our base in Georgia," said Vershbow.
