Azerbaijan, Baku, Sept. 20 / Trend M.Aliyev /

The Azerbaijani Central Election Commission (CEC) Chairman said Monday that there is strong political interest in upcoming parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan.

"There are five electoral blocs registered in connection with the parliamentary elections and there are a sufficient number of political parties contesting the elections individually. Therefore, from a political standpoint, I believe great interest is being shown to the parliamentary elections," Mazahir Panahov said.

The parliamentary election campaign began in Azerbaijan on Sept. 4.

President Ilham Aliyev signed an order on Sept. 3 scheduling the next parliamentary elections for Nov. 7.

Previous elections in the legislature were held in November 2005. In Azerbaijan, parliamentary elections are held on the majority system in 125 electoral districts.

According to Panahov, the military will vote in line with international practice.

"According to the Electoral Code, during the parliamentary elections, monitoring of all polling stations in military units will be conducted in accordance with the requirements that apply to all polling stations. All necessary conditions will be created for observers to monitor the elections in at military units," Panahov said.
