Ricardo: "We took the news about Scolari naturally"

Portugal goalkeeper Ricardo said that the news about coach Luiz Felipe Scolari's departure from the national team had no effect on the players at the Euro 2008, the dpa reported.

"We took the news naturally, as if it were the transfer of a player leaving for another club," the Betis keeper said.

He denied any internal turmoil after Chelsea made it public on its website Wednesday that Scolari would be joining the London side on July 1.

"It is the same for the players and for the coach. His present is to be national coach and to do everything possible to leave the Euro as proud as possible and to make the Portuguese feel the same. Just like ours," Ricardo stressed.

"We are more keen than ever to get the best possible result. We are going to do everything to make sure the farewell is as good as possible," he added.

Ricardo called "prophets of misfortune" all those who cast doubt on the team's stability.

"All attempts to break the great union, the harmony and the climate we share will fail," he warned.

On Thursday, defender Fernando Meira and striker Hugo Almeida, had expressed similar views.

Midfielder Deco returned to the Portugal camp at lunchtime Friday, after leaving for Barcelona on Thursday with permission from Portuguese football authorities.

"I went to deal with personal matters, not to negotiate my future," Deco said as he returned to the Hotel Beau-Rivage in the Swiss town of Neuchatel.

The Portuguese daily Jornal de Noticias reported Friday that Deco has already signed a contract with Chelsea in a move from Spanish club Barcelona.

Portugal is set to play Switzerland Sunday in its last first-round game at the Euro. They have already qualified for the quarter-finals, so are expected to field many players who usually sit on the bench.
