Special Representative of EU Discusses State of Azerbaijani Press with Heads of Non-Governmental Organizations

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. S.Ilhamgizi / European Union's special representative for Caucasus, Peter Semneby, who is on a visit to Baku, held meetings with law observers and heads of non-gevenmental organizations on 21 July. Attending the meeting, Rasim Musabayov, Irada Bagirova, Ilgar Mammadov, Rashid Hajili, Eldar Namazov, Zardusht Alizadeh, Arzu Abdullayeva, Saida Hojamanli, Saadat Benenarli and Shahvalad Chobanoglu, the members of the Karabakh Council, the Committee on Integration into Europe and the Committee on Protection of Right of Journalist Eynulla Fatullayev.

Arzu Abdullayeva noted that the discussions regarding the state of Azerbaijani press, including existing problems in this sphere were discussed.

"Peter Semneby became familiarized with the local media representatives, and touched upon the arrested journalists. Expressing EU's attitude towards freedom of press, Semneby noted that journalists should not incur persecution and arrest for their reports. Semneby considers that any complaints against representatives of press should be expressed by other measures," Abdullayeva said. It was noted that $2mln earnings of the Azerbaijani press from advertisements per year were very low.

According to Abdullayeva, the law observers stated that there was control over internet web sites in Azerbaijan.
