Iran's exports to Georgia remains crippled due to border closure

Iran's exports to Georgia have been affected by closure of the border due to the COVID-19 spread, head of Iran-Georgia Joint Chamber of Commerce Fatemeh Moghimi told Trend.

"All the borders are still closed for trading goods between Iran and Georgia," she said.

"Although Georgia's borders are no closed to others but it is not possible for Iranian trucks to transport goods via border and non-Iranian trucks can transport to this country without any problems," she said.

She said Tehran is following up on the issue.

"Trucks from Russia, from Georgia and Azerbaijan can freely transport goods to Georgia, but Iranian trucks can not. This is not between the foreign ministry and the businessmen, the foreign ministry should fix this with the Gergian side," said the official.

Iran's trade volume with Georgia during 2019 stood at $258.3 million - a 3-percent increase compared to 2018.

Iran's export to Georgia during 2019 dropped by 4 percent, reaching to $71.23 million that included alloy, meat, wood , auto tires, glass ware, polyamide, steel pipelines, pharmaceuticals.

At the same time, Iran's most imported goods from Georgia included Petroleum coke, tile, polyethylene, steel pipes, rebar, Potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide, copper wire.

Iran's investments in Georgia, including in agriculture, processing, construction, real estate, communication and transportation in 2018 stood at $6.7 million, which was an increase compared to 2017. However, during the first three months of 2019, investments from Iranian businessmen in Georgia have decreased by 65 percent.
