(autoinsidernews) - BMW today released the official press pack for the 2007 M5, which has received several new features for the 2007 model year. The most important of these new features, for purists, is the no-cost optional six-speed manual transmission instead of the seven-speed sequential SMG gearbox. The SMG transmission remains as standard equipment.
The new manual transmission option is a clear response to enthusiast's criticism of BMW's SMG gearbox. The single-clutch SMG box is considered inferior to dual-clutch transmissions. BMW as well as other automakers is rumored to be switching to a dual-clutch gearbox like VW's DSG by the end of the decade, reports Trend.
The other new features for the 2007 M5 include a tire pressure monitoring system, high definition radio, and a Real Time Traffic Information system. The 2007 BMW M5 will have a starting base price of $83,195, including destination and handling charges.
