Workshop on Azerbaijan Entering to WTO Held in Baku

A roundtable on unification of legislation in the sanitary and phyto-sanitary control and issues on Azerbaijan entrance to the World Trade Organization (WTO) was held in Baku on December 1, with the organizational support from the Public Union Research Center for Contemporary trade and Economic Relationship, Trend reports.

A representative of the German Federal Ministry on Food, Agriculture and Consumers Protection, Rudigar Ost attended the event.

The German minister said that Azerbaijan will receive technical assistance for establishment of Inquiry Center in the country, a computer system between frontier and central bodies, as well as conduct of training for specialists in Azerbaijan.

The Center will promote unification of the Azerbaijani legislation in the phyto-sanitary requirements under the WTO, as well as the act of source for spread of information on necessary changes existing within the framework of the organization, first of all for business bodies and entrepreneurs.

The project will first of all concern three bodies of the country the Agriculture Ministry (its bodies for sanitary control and veterinary service), the Ministry of Health and State Agency for Standardization, Metrology and Patent.

Azerbaijan and Germany will sign a protocol of approval of this assistance.

Rashad Aliyev, the Head of the Research Center for Contemporary trade and Economic Relationships, said that at present Azerbaijan has several questions for entrance to the WTO. The major ones are the necessity for unification of the legislation and absence of enough information on the number of experienced specialists. Touching upon the Azerbaijan membership at the WTO, he said that though some countries of the region entered the WTO quickly, Azerbaijan has been in this process for 10 years. It hints at more prudent and careful approach to this issue.

Public Union Research Center for Contemporary trade and Economic was founded in 2001 and registered in 2004.
