Russian Analysts Believe that Ukraine will Resolve its Problem with Gasprom

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr Trend A. Badalova / The Ukraine will shortly be able to pay off its debts to the Russian company Gasprom, Russian analysts said.

Gasprom sent to its European partners a message which states the Ukraine's debts for gas supply is over $1.3bln. Gasprom intends to reduce its natural gas deliveries to the Ukraine unless the country repays its debts in October, the letter reads.

According to an analyst of Alfa Bank, Konstantin Batunin, the situation is similar to that of Belarus observed several months ago.

"The problem with Belarus was resolved very rapidly. Now the situation [with the Ukraine] is similar. Gasprom will receive its funds at any rate. The Ukraine will repay the debts," he said.

An analyst of the investment company Aton Broker, Artem Konchin, said that the Ukraine will repay its debts at any rate.

"The Ukraine will pay its debts even if it borrows," he said.

According to representatives from the European Commission, they received a guarantee from Gasprom that the Russian-Ukrainian commercial problem will not affect gas supplies to Europe.
