BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 7. More than 3 million people, mostly in rural areas of Tajikistan, still lack access to safely managed water supply services, Trend reports with the reference to the World Bank (WB).
In Tajikistan's economy, water plays a crucial role in the growth of the most essential sectors. Water is important for the agricultural industry, which employs over half of the population of Tajikistan and accounts for nearly a quarter of GDP (23 percent).
According to WB, water and energy systems of Tajikistan are intertwined but poorly coordinated, causing constant challenges.
Tajikistan's abundant water resources must be managed in a coordinated and effective manner in order to contribute to the country's economic growth and regional cooperation.
