Turkmen Majlis (parliament) approved a draft law "On Refugees", an official Turkmen source said.
The draft law defines the grounds and order of recognition of a foreign citizen or stateless person as refugee in the territory of Turkmenistan, sets economic, social and legal guarantees for the protection of their rights and interests in accordance with the Constitution of Turkmenistan, generally recognized principles and norms of international law.
In recent years the country carried out work to implement the main provisions of international legal instruments into national legislation, which facilitated the formation of a strong legislative framework regulating the situation of refugees in Turkmenistan and guaranteeing their rights and freedoms.
Last year, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov signed a decree granting Turkmen citizenship to 3318 stateless persons residing in the country.
