Earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale occurred in Faregan city of Iranian south province Hormozgan on October 24, Iranian agency FARS said.

The seismic center of Hormozgan province under the Institute of Geophysics of Tehran University has registered earthquake at 06:34 local time (03:04 GMT).

Epicenter of earthquake was 56.67º longitude and 27.98º latitude.

There is no information about number of possible victims or material damage.

Iran is subjected to frequent earthquakes. Most of them are destructive.  

The most powerful earthquake occurred in Bam situated in south-east of Kerman province in December 2003. About 31,000 people died (almost a quarter). An old tower built of mud was destroyed. 

The most destructive earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale occurred in June 1990. About 37,000 people died and more than 100,000 were injured in north-west provinces of Gilan and Zenjan.
