Prices and situation in consumer market in Azerbaijan (January-June 2016)

According to the State Statistics Committee, as of January-June 2016, the Azerbaijani consumer market amounted to 17.721,600 billion manat, which is 1.8 percent more than its turnover for the same period of 2015. The monthly consumer expenses are estimated at 307.3 manat per capita in January-June 2016 or by 32.9 manat more compared to January-June 2015.

According to the State Statistics Committee, the Azerbaijani trading networks sold consumer goods to the population at 13.804,400 billion manat in January-June 2016, which is 1.9 percent more than in the same period of 2015. Legal entities ensured 11 percent of trade turnover.

The monthly retail trade turnover amounted to 239.4 manat, which is 29.5 manat more than in January-June 2015.

The food trade (6.790,600 billion manat) increased by 2.4 percent from year to year in January-June 2016, while retail sales of non-food items (7.013,800 billion manat) - by 0.7 percent.

The country’s commodity market is being mainly developed due to inflationary factors.

Paid services worth 3.387,400 billion manat were rendered to the population in January-June 2016 or 1.2 percent more compared to January-June 2015. Legal entities ensured 55.6 percent of this growth and rendered the services worth 2.492,400 billion manat or by 0.9 percent more than in 2015.

Over this period, every citizen of the country acquired paid services worth 352.5 manat per month, which is 15.3 manat more than in January-June 2015.

Transportation, public utilities and communication services prevail in the structure of paid services.

Prices

According to the State Statistics Committee, inflation in the country amounted to 10.5 percent in January-June 2016 compared to January-June 2015.

The food prices increased by 11.9 percent, non-food items – 15.4 percent and tariffs for services – 4.5 percent in January-June 2016 compared to January-June 2015.

Such a high rate of inflation in the country was the result of the impact of national currency devaluation.

The prices on consumer goods decreased by 0.5 percent in Azerbaijan in June 2016 compared to May 2016.

The food prices decreased by 1.3 percent, non-food items – increased by 0.3 percent, tariffs for services remained unchanged in Azerbaijan in June 2016 compared to May.

During the reporting month, the prices for rice, buckwheat, oats, barley, chicken, butter and olive oil, lemons, tangerine, strawberry increased.

The prices for pasta, beef, lamb, unpasteurized milk, eggs, sunflower and corn oil, apples, pear, cherry, cherry-plum, peach, apricot, tomatoes, cucumber, eggplant, carrots, beet, pepper, green beans, cabbage, potatoes, garlic and onion decreased.

Prices on other food products were not greatly changed.

The prices for fabric, clothing and footwear, construction materials, jewelry, carpets and floor coverings, glassware, tableware and cutlery, household appliances, television, computers, spare parts for cars increased.

Prices on other non-food items were not greatly changed.

The base index of consumer prices, calculated except for the goods and services subject to seasonal changes (fruits and vegetables) increased by 12.1 percent in January-June 2016 compared to January-June 2015.

The industrial producer price index increased by 3.9 percent in Azerbaijan in June 2016 compared to May 2016. A 7.8 percent growth was observed compared to January-June 2015.

During this period, producer prices in the mining industry increased by 4.7 percent and by 0.8 percent in the manufacturing industry.

The producer prices for oil and gas production increased by 4.7 percent, mining of metal ore - by 0.3 percent and the extraction of stone, sand, gravel and salt – decreased by 0.2 percent in June.

As for the manufacturing industry, producer prices in the production of motor vehicles and trailers increased by 11 percent, in the weaving industry – by 3.1 percent, in the field of petroleum products - by 1.9 percent, electrical equipment - by 0.1 percent.

The prices in the sphere of ​​tobacco production in June fell by 4.2 percent, chemical industry - by three percent, the pharmaceutical production - by 2.6 percent, beverages - by 1.5 percent, food products - by 1.4 percent, garment manufacturing and steel industry - by 0.3 percent, printing activity - 0.2 percent.

The producer prices for other activities in the manufacturing industry have not changed.

In the first half of 2016, tariffs for cargo transportation by transport sector of Azerbaijan in national currency increased by 34.7 percent compared to the same period of 2015.

According to the State Statistics Committee, as of June 2016, the tariffs for cargo transportation sector in Azerbaijan increased by 0.4 percent compared to May.

Freight transport by air and rail transport for the period rose by 0.7 percent and cargo transportation by sea - 0.6 percent.

In June, the tariffs for transportation of gas by pipelines increased by 0.7 percent, for transportation of oil - by 0.2 percent.

Tariffs for cargo transportation by road transport increased by 0.2 percent in June.
