The European Union welcomes the dialogue on the Electoral Code between the Georgian government and its opposition, the Head EU Representative in Georgia Philip Dimitrov said in his statement.

"The EU also welcomes the involvement of civil society in this process, as reforming the electoral code is a significant step towards Georgia's European aspiration," Dimitrov said in the statement.

Dimitrov expressed hope that the outcome of the talks "would be acceptable not only for both sides, but will also correspond with the recommendations of the OSCE and Venice Commission, and will contribute to building confidence between the sides".

Representatives of the parliamentary and non-parliamentary opposition prepared a draft of amendments to the Electoral Code in the autumn of 2010. These amendments are being discussed with representatives of the parliamentary majority. However, talks reached a deadlock two weeks ago.
