New Minister of Corrections and Legal Assistance Irakli Tugushi familiarised the Georgian president with changes made to the prison system. A meeting with Mikheil Saakashvili took place at the presidential palace.

Tugushi outlined priority plans to reform the prison system. The parties discussed the possible introduction of alternative punishment which could replace arrests.

Tugushi said that currently the situation has stabilised in all detention facilities and is under the ministry's control.

"Today, prisoners say that they are well treated and we will continue to preserve this standard in the future," Tugushi said.

Saakashvili said that emphasis should be placed on the social rehabilitation of prisoners. He expressed satisfaction with the new minister's actions.
