At least 12 people were killed Saturday when a passenger minibus collided with a cargo truck in the central Philippines, a local official said, according to dpa.

Ten more were injured in the collision at dawn on a highway in Naga town in Cebu province, 585 kilometres south of Manila, Mayor Valdemar Chiong said.

Investigators said the minibus was racing with another vehicle and encroached on the opposite lane. Its driver apparently did not see the approaching cargo truck.

Chiong said all the injured victims, two of whom were in critical condition, were rushed for treatment to a nearby hospital.

Chiong said the fatalities were nine men and three women.
