Modest Banfield win first-ever Argentine championship

Modest club Banfield on Sunday won the Argentine Apertura football championship, the first major title in their 113-year history, dpa reported.

The side from the southern Buenos Aires suburb of Banfield lost 2- 0 at mighty Boca Juniors Sunday, but still sealed their championship title since their only rivals for the honour, Newell's Old Boys, also lost by 2-0 at home to San Lorenzo.

Fans celebrated the historic triumph in a solid season in which Banfield only lost two matches of the 19 they played. They were also the side with the least goals against and featured the tournament's top scorer, Uruguayan striker Santiago Silva.
