Four Taliban militants were killed as their mine exploded prematurely in Afghanistan's southern Ghazni province, spokesman for provincial administration Syed Ismael Jihangir said Monday.

Four Taliban rebels were planting a mine on a road in Gilan district late Sunday night to target security forces but the device went off prematurely killing all the four on the spot," Jihangir told Xinhua.

Taliban militants who are largely relying on roadside bombings and suicide attacks have yet to make comment.

The deadly weapons -- roadside bombings and suicide attacks have proved challenging for both Afghan and over 140,000 NATO-led troops stationed in Afghanistan to help strengthen peace in the post-Taliban nation.
