Holbrooke, Afghanistan contact group meet in Rome

US special representative for Afghanistan Richard Holbrooke and General David Petraeus are scheduled to meet Afghan Foreign Minister Zalmai Rassoul and other diplomats in Rome on Monday, according to Italy's foreign ministry, DPA reported.

The talks, convened by Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini, are to focus on progress made on "returning to Afghans control of their territory and finalise political strategies that will guarantee stability," the ministry said in a statement.

The "role of neighbouring countries," in ensuring the success of the transition is also on the agenda.

An Iranian government representative would also participate in the talks, the ministry said.

The meeting comes amid growing Western concern over an escalation in the conflict with the Taliban, but also tentative signs of possible peace talks with the militants.

Holbrooke arrives in Italy at the end of a European tour, following a NATO ministerial meeting in Brussels, as well as talks in Berlin and Paris.
