EU commissioner: Road is open for unregulated cloned food

European Union Health Commissioner John Dalli said Tuesday it is a "great pity" that talks over food from the offspring of cloned animals have broken down, saying that it paves the way for the unregulated entry of such products into the bloc, DPA reported.

"The present situation where there is no control at all on cloning techniques or on clones will be the rule again in Europe," he said. "It could have been a situation of a regulatory regime, which I think would have put us in a much better position."

But Dalli was also quick to note that "the scientific assessment we have on cattle is that there is absolutely no risk to health" from cloning.
