Poland's biggest train operator was shut down by a strike Wednesday, leaving some 2,700 trains idled in a dispute over higher wages, DPA reported.

The 24-hour strike at the Przewozy Regionalne railway forced the 300,000 passengers it carries daily to cancel their trips or find alternate buses or trains.

The strike came after negotiations between labour unions and management ended in a stalemate Tuesday.

The unions are demanding a hike of 280 zloty (97 dollars) in monthly wages.
