An Afghan jail official said Wednesday that the man suspected of killing three children, a teacher and three soldiers in France had escaped from a jail in southern Afghanistan, dpa reported.

Kandahar prison director Ghulam Farooq said that the suspect was being held in Kandahar's central jail in 2007, but had subsequently escaped in one of two jailbreaks, either in 2008 or in 2011.

"We have documents that show (the suspect) was in Kandahar central jail under our custody in 2007," Farooq told dpa, without being able to confirm which of the two jailbreaks he may have escaped in.

In the 2011 jailbreak, more than 400 inmates - most of them Taliban fighters - escaped from the main prison in Kandahar city.

"We are investigating the documents right now," Farooq said.
