Overnight gas poisoning claims four lives in Turkey

Three people from a family of five were found dead from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning on Sunday night in the İstanbul district of Ümraniye, Today's Zaman reported.

The carbon monoxide is believed to have leaked from the family's combustion heater.

The mother, Hatice İnce, the father, Fetullah İnce, and their 5-year-old son, Adem İnce, were found by the couple's daughter, Aslı İnce.

The girl woke up to discover the bodies of her younger brother and parents in the next room. Aslı immediately notified neighbors who called an ambulance. The bodies of the three were taken to the morgue at Ümraniye State Hospital. An inspection by police officers revealed that the heater's flue pipe was blocked, causing the release of carbon monoxide gas into the home.

In a separate incident, a gas leak from a home hot water system appears to have led to the death of a young woman in the northwestern province of Çanakkale on Sunday night. It is suspected that the young woman, who was engaged to be married, was overcome by leaking gas while taking a shower. The woman's mother, concerned about her daughter's excessive time in the bathroom, found her unconscious in the shower. She was immediately taken to the Biga Can Private Hospital, where she later died. An investigation into the incident is continuing.
