Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov has approved the development programme for oil and gas complex, chemical industry for 2012-2016, the Turkmen government said on Saturday.

A government meeting has been recently held. It was stressed that the total amount of oil produced in the country during this period will hit 55.9 million tons and natural gas - 448.7 billion cubic meters.

According to the information, the Turkmen leader urged the heads of the fuel-energy complex to ensure full implementation of all plans outlined in this important document.

Turkmenistan's proven gas reserves in 2011 amounted to 24.3 trillion cubic meters which exceeded estimates as of 2010 to the amount of 13.4 trillion cubic meters, BP's World Energy 2012 report said.

According to BP, last year Turkmenistan produced 59.5 billion cubic meters of gas which is 40.6 per cent more than the volume of 2010. At the same time, Turkmenistan's share in global gas production was 1.8 percent last year.

Gas consumption in the country last year totaled 25.0 billion cubic meters which is 10 percent more than in the previous year.

Oil production in Turkmenistan amounted to 216,000 barrels per day in 2011, BP's annual review says. At the same time, the share of Turkmenistan in global oil production was 0.3 percent last year.

According to BP's estimates, oil consumption in the country increased by 3.9 percent up to 108,000 barrels per day in 2011.

BP has kept estimates on proven oil reserves in Turkmenistan in 2011 at 0.1 billion tons (0.6 billion barrels), as in the previous year.
