Iran would issue tenders on increasing the efficiency of power plants with 18 gigawatts capacity soon.

“Currently the efficiency of these power plants stands at 33 percent in average and Iran plans to increase this figure to 48 percent by 2021,” Iran's Deputy Minister of Energy Houshang Falahatian said during an interview with state TV, IRIB on January 14.

Iran’s nominal power plants’ capacity stands at about 76 GW and their average efficiency is about 37 percent.

Falahatian said that Iran plans to convert the current thermal power plants to combined-cycle power plans to increase their efficiency.

Coming to new projects, he added that Iran also plans to construct new power plants with 25 GW capacity and up to 58 percent efficiency by 2021. “We will use F and H class turbines for new power plants,” he said.

Iran recently received its first F-class turbine, made by German Siemens, to be installed at a 1 GW power plant in Bandar Abbas.

Thermal power plants share about 84.8 percent of Iran’s total power generation capacity. The share of the combined-cycle power plans in Iran’s total power generation is also about 25 percent.
