Tbilisi, Georgia, Feb. 14
By Nana Kirtzkhalia - Trend:
The Court of Appeal upheld the acquittal in the case of the so-called prison revolt with regard to former Georgian Defense Minister Bacho Akhalaia. This decision was made on Feb.14 by Judge Shorena Kavelashvili.
The Prosecutor's Office was accusing Akhalaia on two articles in the case of the prison revolt. The court of first instance found Akhalaia and the persons accused together with him guilty of inhumane treatment. And the charge of abuse of power was withdrawn.
The ex-minister was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison, but the country's president of that time pardoned him.
The Prosecutor's Office made an appeal against acquittal, but the judge did not recognize its arguments.
Akhalaia is still in prison, as he is facing new charges of abuse of power.
