President Obama called the president of Turkey on Friday to express condolences for the lives lost in a mine explosion and fire earlier this week, USA Today reported.

Obama spoke with Turkish counterpart Abdullah Gul, the National Security Council said Friday in a statement, telling him that "the United States stands ready to provide any assistance that could help those affected."
