Union of Azerbaijani opposition parties can turn into election bloc

"It is not excluded that union of the Azerbaijani opposition parties can turn into election bloc. The Board of Chairmen of the Union For Democracy (UFD) has decided to realize this matter," Ahmad Oruj, the chairman of the Azadlig (Freedom) Party, represented at the UFD, told Trend on Dec. 15.

Municipal elections will be held in Azerbaijan in Dec. 2009 and parliamentary elections - in Nov. 2010. Municipal elections were held in Azerbaijan twice - in 1999 and 2004.

The Board of Chairmen will send this decision to supreme institutions of the Union's parties for discussions, Oruj said.

"The united lists will be developed for the upcoming municipal and parliamentary elections after agreement of the parties. It is planned to make joint measures on the elections, as well," Oruj said.

Union for Democracy was founded by the opposition Classic Popular Front Party, Azadlig party and National Democracy Party after 2005 parliamentary election. Great Azerbaijan Party joined the union in early Sept. 2008 and People's Party - in Nov. The Union is advisory and cooperation body.
