"We saw a clear example of Georgia's progress in European integration in the local elections," Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili said at the opening ceremony of the Tbilisi Prosecutor's Office's new building.

He said the "maturity" of opposition political parties is "significant."

"It is nice when the elections are of a civilized nature. The defeated opposition political parties congratulated the winning candidate of the ruling United National Movement party, Gigi Ugulava, for the first time," Saakashvili said.

Saakashvili said "some parties believe Georgia is Tbilisi, so they only speak about the elections results in the capital. Tbilisi is only one-fourth of Georgia. But we know that this is not the whole country and they then wonder why the ruling party achieved the same results as in 2004."
